Rodney David Kilbee
It’s with great sadness that the Old Dovorian Club have to announce the following statement from Michael Walter (C59 – 62) the President of the Old Dovorian Golf Society.
Dear Fellow Old Dovorians.
It is with great sadness that I must report the death of our friend and fellow old Dovorian, Rodney Kilbee. (30.06.1944 26.10.2024)
Rodney David Kilbee (C, 1958-1962) was head of Crescent House and Captain of Cricket and Hockey at Dover College. An outstanding cricket player, he was selected for Young Amateurs of Kent in 1961 and 1962 and won the Daily Express Award for best cricketing performance in July 1970.
He continued to represent the OD’s at cricket and was a valued and popular captain of Selsted Cricket Club for many years. Equally gifted on the Hockey Field, he was captain of the College Hockey Tour to Holland and at the Oxford Hockey Festival in 1962.
He was captain and a very efficient organiser of the OD Hockey team for many years until it ceased playing. He was also Club Captain at Folkestone Optimist Hockey Club, playing until his early 70’s and will be greatly missed, not just as a former player, but also for coaching young players for many years and as a willing and supportive member of the club. He won the Golf Club Championship at the old Folkestone Golf Course at age 13 but played infrequently thereafter due to his focus on team sports.
It was a tribute to his popularity that a number of Cricket and Hockey friends supported a birthday Cricket bash at Selsted, organised by his children Chris and Annabel, to celebrate his 80th.birthday in June, with several players in their late 70’s, including Rod himself, participating in the match!
Rod qualified as a Chartered Surveyor with Martin Sheffield & Bristow in Dover and continued to work with private clients until his death.
He was a dedicated family man, devoted to his beloved wife, Pam, and visiting her every day at her nursing home in recent years. We send our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Pam, his children Chris and Annabel and his grandchildren Joe,Eva,Ilde and Hedley. May they all take some comfort over time from knowing how much Rod was appreciated and respected in every facet of his life.
Rest in Peace
MICHAEL WALTER
President ODGS
