The OD Golf Society Captain Opening 2025 Message
For those of us who have not escaped to warmer climates, the month of January and February have so far proved rather wet & cold with the result that my home course has been closed for as many days as it has been open. Therefore, I hope that in the coming months we can organise some warmer dryer weather at our golf days.
I must apologise for the delay in issuing my first message unfortunately I have been the guest of the West Sussex NHS services during this last week, a
after being diagnosed with a severely infected Bursitis on my right arm which basically meant I became a one arm bandit. I am pleased to say that the care I received by the staff at Horsham and then Crawley hospital was exemplary, and having been discharged I can nearly dress myself although it will be some time before I can pick up a club.
This year as you know we have reduced the number of events we are to hold with the aim of maximising attendance. In addition, following Nigel’s initiative, we plan to hold 5 Home Fixture events where OD members invite three other members for a round of golf at member visitor rates. We recognise that even with society-based rates the cost of a day’s golf at our events were spiralling. As an example, the OL Captain’s day in 2023 was £98, in 2024 it rose to £105 and this year the OL’s event will be £115, which sadly is naturally one of the reasons we are not participating in their events.
The Home fixtures will still be able to provide more reasonable priced events at very prestigious courses. (Rye, Littlestone, The Richmond, The Wisley or Liphook).
Our final fixture of the Year & the ODGS AGM of the year will now be at the Lamberhurst GC in Kent, following the kind invitation of Robert Dicketts. As most clubs only permit members to secure visitors’ tee booking one week in advance, we will be sending out further information on the exact date of the home fixtures when known, as such some will not be on the printed fixture card.
Finally following an Initiative by Michael, we have also launched a new membership Category with the kind assistance of Alyce the College Development Officer to attract former pupils under the Age of thirty to join as Alumni ODGC Members given our efforts over the past 2 years have not succeeded. We hope this radical refreshing concept will help reduce the understandable barriers of study, work, young family, cost, and distance.
“Our hope is that you have fun, enjoy the day, and want to return for more.”
Many thanks and take care.
