OD Golf Society At Rye Golf Club – Home Fixture hosted by Jack Fuller
Nigel and I were privileged to play a match on the Jubilee course against Mark and our host at the prestigious Rye Golf club on Wednesday 15th October.
What we learnt was that the Rye GC main course was the first course which Harry Colt designed. Quite extraordinarily we were delighted to meet his granddaughter (a golfing visitor) who like me was visiting Rye GC for the first time.
Jack felt it would be fun to play greensomes, where both players tee off, however before taking the first drive, the pair decide who will take all the second shots on the even holes and who will play all the second shots on the odd holes.
Here we see Nigel, the only one we assumed with family connections to Newcastle, given the inclement overcast weather, wearing shorts and looking very snappy in his ‘Open Golf’ Marshall’s attire.
Nigel and I got off to a fast start, which was probably due to the fact that Mark had already won the longest drive (4 and 1/2 hours), and clearly needed time to settle. However, Mark’s smooth driving started to pay dividends as this lead was overturned, and the pair took a one-shot lead.
This neck and neck shot by shot game went to the wire with the game only being secured by the shortest winning putt in the history of the OD golf Society on the 18th.
The putt not being conceded due to me missing probably an even shorter one on an earlier hole.
Fortunately, after such a close match, a delicious meal and a modicum of drink was very welcome, Jack very kindly organized prize giving at the wonderful Plough Inn in Udimore, where we all warmed up next to a beautiful wood burner fireplace.
Jack very generously awarded prizes to all of us, with Mark winning the nearest the pin awards (Sadly neither I nor Nigel found the greens on any of the par threes. Our excuses will be explained in full at the AGM).

Here we see Mark just about being able to lift the humongous bottle of Saint Emilion awarded by Jack. Sadly, offers to help Mark to reduce the weight of the bottle by drinking a few glasses fell on deaf ears.
