Across Generations, Along the River: A Heartfelt Old Dovorian Reunion in Atlanta -

At the end of last month, three Old Dovorians—Mike Lightbourn (S56–61), Ian Prentice (M75–80), and George Blankson (L85–90)—gathered for the very first time at “Canoe by the River,” a charming restaurant nestled along the tranquil banks of the Chattahoochee River in Vinings, Atlanta. Though they had never met before, what unfolded over brunch was a beautiful testament to the enduring spirit of Dover College and the lifelong camaraderie it inspires.

Despite spanning three decades and having walked the halls of Dover College under three different Headmasters, Mike, Ian, and George found themselves instantly connected by a shared heritage that transcended age and time. Their conversation flowed as easily as the river beside them—filled with laughter, memories, and reflections on how the College had evolved from Mike’s first day in 1956 to George’s final year in 1990.

What might have felt like a history lesson became something far more personal: a living tapestry of student life, woven from three distinct eras, each thread coloured by unique experiences yet bound by the same values and traditions. From tales of house rivalries and chapel services to the changing face of the College grounds, their stories painted a vivid picture of Dover’s legacy through the eyes of those who lived it.

This spontaneous gathering was more than just a meal—it was a celebration of connection. It reminded us that being an Old Dovorian isn’t just about friendships formed during school years; it’s about the ability to forge new ones, rooted in a shared identity and pride in belonging to a community that continues to span continents and generations.

Moments like these reaffirm the magic of Dover College: its ability to unite people across time, geography, and life experience. And as Mike, Ian, and George proved, all it takes is a common bond—and perhaps a good brunch—to turn strangers into lifelong friends
