ODGS Match Report – ODGS Against Dover College 27th May

First, I would again like to thank Vicky Jones, of the College for an incredible College turnout, the largest so far since the inception of this fixture.
We were delighted to learn that the College now offers Golf during part of the year as part of the school’s curriculum. Pupils of the College now attend Etchinghill Golf Club once a week to have coaching.
This year’s event was again a fun based Texas scramble where pupils, staff, parents, and ODs were formed into mixed teams. The format is designed to ensure that even if you blasted your ball into the rough from the drive or from the approach shot.
The next shot would definitely be from the middle of the fairway, given one of your team members probably had a good shot.
Similarly, even if you duffed the approach shot into the bunker or the adjacent pond you would be saved by another of your team landing their ball safely on the green. Therefore, the normal despair and angst caused by a poor golf shot would quickly evaporate.
The event was won by Team B ably led by Louis, with the entire team producing some marvellous shots, to score an incredible 69 gross, one under par for the course.
Winners of the best net competition (Gross minus the Handicap allowance provided by the OD Captain, which is not open to review under VAR) were Team C with an equally impressive 74, 4 over par for the course to score a net 57. Michael Tubman, having a long history of par 3 achievements, also winning one of the nearest the pin prizes.
Team A and Team F then tied for third place with an impressive net score of 60

The early groups were lucky to tee off in reasonably fine weather, and the hope was that the forecast of an Atlantic storm, with thundering heavy showers and gale force winds would be avoided. Sadly, the storm arrived just as team F ( the last to tee off ) reached the 6th Tee and stayed until the 16th tee. By which time the OD captain was soaked to the skin even with full waterproofs and unable to see, given his windscreen wipers had packed up on his glasses.

Team E were only 1 shot behind teams A & F, with Jarle ably guiding the team round his home course.
The final team in the event led by Howard appeared to take the competition very seriously deliberating on every approach shot and debating the slopes and swings of the ball on the greens.
Sadly, by the time this group arrived back at the club house, the sumptuous sandwiches and chips had been consumed, and the club house closed several hours earlier.
Despite the weather it was clear the day was yet again a fabulous success, and we look forward to this event next year. Take care all.
Gilbert
ODGS Captain.
