The second of Nigel’s Home fixtures at the Littlestone Golf Club on Friday 15th August.

It was a delight to welcome Toby Caufield, a name much mentioned in the ODs membership to join Nigel and myself at Nigel’s ‘2nd Home’ event. We were cordially greeted with a tasty bacon sandwich and a refreshing drink to counter the impending clear blue sky with 29 degrees forecast.

Fortunately, Toby had engineered his diary for once to escape the rigours of his business and enjoy the challenge of this spectacular links course.

Due to the delightful M25 & M20 we were both slightly late arriving on the 1st tee with 2 other groups awaiting our drives, so running up I was alarmed to see Toby on the 1st tee , making several practice swings facing the wrong way so I shouted “Toby it’s the other way”, not wishing him to drive his ball directly through the club house changing room window. Until Nigel pointed out, much to my relief that Toby was left-handed!

I could see Toby was by nature a shy quiet character, clearly not used to openly expressing any form of judgements or banter , it was therefore refreshing to see  after a few holes, Toby relax and become more confident to even make a few well timed comments on Nigel’s enormous handicap then demonstrate his golfing ability to complete a number of hard hitting long straight drives and well-aimed approach shots to the green to register a solid 34 points, even with the wind against on the back nine.

Nigel as reported had already posted an admirable 37 points at the 1st event and so laid down a personal challenge to see if I might be able to surpass it. I took- up the challenge provided Nigel would submit the day’s card.

Fortuitously for once I was able to post a score of 38 points, to secure the prestigious Graham Turner Plate however an even bigger reward was to have confirmed that England golf has reduce Nigel’s handicap.

The secret to Nigel’s success revealed.

It was clear from the off, that Toby was not only an excellent golfer, but had the clear measure of Mr T, given he has known Nigel from a very tender age. As Nigel’s brother-in-law Toby was able to reveal some of the secrets to Nigel’s golfing success.

It transpires Nigel’s prowess is not solely due to his relationship with the Mexican Golfing Authority after all, but primarily due to healthy eating, particularly the consumption of fresh home-grown garden vegetables. This was confirmed by Nigel’s personal delivery to both of us of an extremely large bag of Kale, runner beans & green beans due to this year’s bumper crop, which has resulted in my goodly wife Ann singing the praises of Nigel’s prowess in the garden.

It therefore gives me immense pleasure in thanking Nigel not only for his wonderful hospitality but for bringing a smile to our home, at least for this week. Again, we hope this event will be repeated next year.
