A Life Rebuilt, One Transplant at a Time

David Lam (S89–93) has dedicated his career to giving others a second chance at life. Since 2014, he has served as an abdominal transplant surgeon at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), performing complex transplantations of the liver, kidney, and pancreas. His expertise also spans specialist liver and gallbladder surgery, living donor procedures, and extraction surgery—each one a testament to precision, compassion, and hope.

Following an exhilarating five-year international chapter in Taiwan and the United States, where he focused on living donor liver transplants and advanced transplant techniques, David has returned to LUMC with renewed purpose and passion. “I’m back with heart and soul,” he shares, reflecting on the journey that shaped his global perspective and deepened his commitment to patient care.

What fuels David’s dedication is the extraordinary collaboration behind every transplant. “It’s the magic of teamwork,” he says. “Nurses, surgical staff, medical specialists, and paramedics—each one plays a vital role in helping patients with end-stage organ failure reclaim their lives. Together, we make a difference every day. And that energy is contagious.”

At the heart of this innovation is TRAX, LUMC’s dynamic transplant unit, where enthusiasm meets cutting-edge thinking. From quality dashboards to care process analysis and pioneering surgical techniques, the team is constantly evolving—driven by a shared mission to improve outcomes and accelerate recovery.

Looking ahead, David’s ambition is clear: to harness his global experience and surgical expertise to help patients return home swiftly, fit and smiling. “It’s about restoring quality of life,” he says, “and doing so with empathy, excellence, and joy.”

David Lam embodies the spirit of the Old Dovorian legacy—global in outlook, grounded in service, and unwavering in the pursuit of progress.
