Old Dovorian Golf Society (ODGS)

Founded in 1961, the Golfing Society kicked off with the first Triangular match among The Cantuarian (King’s Canterbury), the Old Lawrentians (St. Lawrence Ramsgate), and the Old Dovorian Golf Society (Dover College).

Currently, the Old Dovorian Golfing Society (ODGS) strives to offer an enjoyable golfing experience for Dover College alumni and those from its Junior School. We host around eight events each year at different golf courses across Surrey and Kent, usually on weekdays, which include a round of golf and are followed by either lunch, breakfast, or sandwiches.

Opportunities exist to organize events further afield should there be demand. It’s a sociable day out where we all enjoy a good chat about various topics. Our group is a diverse mix, including ODs with handicaps ranging from about 10 to 30 or more, accommodating a wide range of skills and experience.

In 2021, the Old Dovorian Golf Society established an annual match against the school, typically held during the summer near the school’s half term. The school assembles a team of pupils, parents, and staff to compete against the OD Golf Society at a local course near Dover.

At most Golf Society events, about ten ODs typically compete individually in matches of three or four balls for a trophy and coveted golf balls emblazoned with the OD logo. The majority of the Golf Society’s fixtures are collaborative events with the Old Lawrentian Golf Society, contributing to an enjoyable day.

The highlight of the Golf Society’s calendar is the annual visit to Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey in July, and the Triangular match at West Surrey against alumni of Eastbourne College and Allhallows. This match is played in a foursome format, comprising four groups, each with three balls and six players.

The Golf Society, currently with around 40 members, is eager to welcome new ones. Presently, there are no female players, a situation the Golf Society is actively striving to change.

Joining the Golf Society is straightforward; simply email the Treasurer, and President Michael Walter will provide you with all the necessary information and assist you with the setup.

The Golf Society also invites OD’s to join us for a trial day to determine if our society is the right fit for you before making a commitment.
