The Old Dovorian Lodge: A Tradition of Fellowship and Legacy

Many Old Dovorians have expressed a growing interest in the Old Dovorian Lodge. In response, the Lodge is delighted to host a special Reception—open to all ODs and members of staff, whether Freemasons or not. This gathering offers a warm welcome and a chance to learn more about the Lodge’s unique heritage and ongoing role within the Dover College community.
A Brotherhood Rooted in Shared History
The Old Dovorian Lodge enjoys a distinctive relationship with two other historic East Kent school lodges:
- Old Lawrentian Lodge (St Lawrence College)
- The Cantuarian Lodge (The King’s School, Canterbury)
This triad of Public School Lodges is bound by a legacy of mutual support. The Old Lawrentian Lodge, founded first, sponsored the creation of the
Old Dovorian Lodge, which in turn later sponsored The Cantuarian Lodge. Once rivals on the playing fields, members of these three Lodges collaborated in fraternal harmony, united by shared values and traditions, until the Old Lawrentian Lodge unfortunately decided to close, it was then left to the Old Dovorian Lodge and Cantuerian Lodge to continue and preserve the legacy with out there sister lodge, which they do to this day.
A Legacy Since 1937
The Old Dovorian Lodge was formally established on Friday, 29th January 1937. Its first Initiate was none other than W. S. Lee, then Headmaster of Dover College. Since its inception, the Lodge has welcomed members from all walks of life—ODs and non-ODs alike—across all ages, races, and creeds.
When and Where We Meet
- Four meetings a year are held in London, each followed by a convivial dinner.
- Every two years, the Lodge returns to Dover for a special Saturday meeting, followed by a dinner in the College Refectory. This cherished event often includes guests, staff, and current students, offering a meaningful way to stay connected with the School and its evolving story.
The Spirit of Freemasonry
While the true origins of Freemasonry are lost to history, its modern form emerged in the 17th century when stonemasons’ lodges began admitting men drawn to their moral code. Over the centuries, many notable figures—including Sir Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Sir Winston Churchill, and Rudyard Kipling—have counted themselves among the ranks of Freemasons.
Today, Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for one. It is a system of morality, founded on three enduring principles:
- Brotherly Love – fostering respect and kindness among all people
- Relief – offering charity and support to those in need
- Truth – upholding integrity and honesty in all aspects of life
Within the Lodge, members find a private and supportive space to reflect on these values and build lasting bonds of friendship and purpose.

Charity, or relief, stands as one of the three fundamental pillars of Freemasonry. It is therefore no surprise that the Old Dovorian Lodge has cultivated a proud and enduring tradition of giving—one that continues to thrive today.
Through the “Master’s List,” the Lodge channels its charitable efforts into meaningful causes. This includes generous contributions to the Bursey Fund at Dover College, support for the Metropolitan Grand Lodge Appeals, and donations to local initiatives such as Dover’s own “The smART” charity. These are just a few examples of the many organisations the Lodge has supported over the years.
The Old Dovorian Lodge remains committed to making a positive impact—honouring its Masonic values by uplifting both its immediate community and the wider world.
